Dental procedures are performed as a day procedure under anaesthesia, most commonly in Dogs, Cats and Rabbits.
Here we had Astro in for the day to give his teeth a clean. Astro is 9 years old but for his age had extremely good teeth as his devoted Mom had done a great job of cleaning his teeth over the years. Most dogs will need 2 to 3 dentals within their lifetime if no dental hygiene is performed at home. With continued dental care at home (daily brushing), there is a good chance Astro will need no further dental procedures in future.
We performed some preoperative blood tests to ensure he was suitable for a general anaesthetic. An intravenous catheter was placed and he was given intravenous fluids to keep him hydrated and enable us to manage his blood pressure whilst under anaesthesia.
General anaesthesia was then administered and his vitals were monitored by our trained technicians using our multiparameter monitoring machine (Heart rate, Blood Pressure, Pulse Oximeter and Capnograph).
A dental scaling was performed and then his teeth were polished leaving a nice smooth surface so plaque builds up less readily. He had 4 of his small incisors (front teeth) removed but the rest of his teeth were in really great shape.
Astro was such a good boy and went home the same day with a shiny fresh-smelling mouth and very happy to see his Mom!
